Why Organize Your Financial Records?

Have you ever applied for a loan be it an auto or mortgage loan, but could not find your paycheck stubs to prove your income? Keeping your financial records organized where you can get to them can make your life easier. Here are the main items that you should keep organized.

  • Your Household Documents - This would include pay stubs, your monthly bills, bank statements, and canceled checks. You should create a file for each of these items. These folders should be stored in a bank box or file cabinet and be separated by year.
  • Financial Documents - THis would include tax records, mortgage notes, lease notes, auto contracts, divorce agreement, child support agreements, etc. You should create a file folder as well for these documents and stored in a fireproof safe.
  • Estate Documents - This will include wills, life insurance policies, stock certificates, bonds certificates, family trust paper, managed account portfolio statements, etc. These as well should be in a file folder in a fireproof safe.
  • Family Documents - This would include social security cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports, copy of drivers licenses, etc. These should be stored in a fireproof safe as well.
