Losing a credit, debit or ATM card

If you ever have lost your credit card debit card or ATM card you know what kind of feeling that it is, it makes a person feel helpless. But incidents like this do happen once in awhile . When it does some recurrent questions that may come to your mind are:

  • What is the solution and how long will it take?
  • If I have lost my card, will I get it back or should i call for a new one?
  • Will I get back my money if things were charged on it?

The rate of credit cards being lost or stolen have become higher since we use them more and more nowadays

Here is a little guideline incase you have lost or know someone that lost or had their card stolen:

  • Report the loss or theft of your credit card, ATM Card or debit card to the issuer of this card as soon as you realize its gone.
  • Most credit card companies having toll-free numbers set up for situations like this.
  • Also it would not hurt to check your homeowner's insurance policy to see if it covers your liability for card thefts. If not, some insurance companies will allow you to change your policy to include this protection.

Once you have done the above you should review your statements very care fully. If they have unauthorized charges that you see, it is best to call the card issuer and describing each questionable charge with them, report to the card issuer the exact date and time your card was lost or stolen or when you first cited unauthorized charges and also mention the date when you first reported the problem to them. Also, be sure to report to the address provided for billing errors. The law of the state says you will be charged only $50 for unauthorized use of your credit card provided you have reported the loss before your credit cards are used. The FCBA or Fair Credit Billing Act states that the card issuer cannot hold you responsible for any unauthorized charges.
